like a phoenix from the ashes: pomegranates record release party

Like A Phoenix From The Ashes: Pomegranates Record Release Party
Sunday March 28th
On Sunday March 28th, Cinema Family in Los Angeles will be hosting Like A Phoenix From The Ashes: Pomegranates Record Release Party.
Cinefamily, an organization of movie lovers devoted to finding and presenting interesting and unusual programs of exceptional, distinctive, weird and wonderful films -- is hosting the release of Pomegranates, a collection of vintage Persian folk, funk, and psychedelia on the Finders Keepers record label. The party will also be celebrating Norooz, the Persian New Year! This spring-equinox-special will boast a psychedelic visual feast of ultra-rare vintage film and un-earthed music video pastiche from 60s/70s Iran, collaged and directed by Cinefamily's Tom Fitzgerald, and soundtracked with an exclusive Middle Eastern mash-up mix created by B-Music/Finders Keepers founder Andy Votel. "Pomegranates" curators Arash Saedinia and Mahssa Taghinia will be DJing before and after the screening. Amidst the protests, violence, and politically charged situation within Iran, currently, we are excited to present a positive celebration that is socially and culturally relevant and informative, within Los Angeles. Co-presented by B-Music/Finders Keepers, Dublab, and Amoeba Music Sunday March 28 8pm Tickets $10 Facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=379767185836 Cinema Family: http://www.cinefamily.org/calendar/events.html

LOSCIL - ENDLESS FALLS- KRANKY

Endless Falls is the fifth full length release by Scott Morgan under the loscil moniker. The album begins and ends with the sound of rain recorded by Scott in his back yard. Many of the other sounds on the album are derived from these same recordings, processed and combined with other harmonic sounds to create the textures and drones.

POMEGRANATES- V/A-B-MUSIC

Collecting some of the most obscure, eye-popping electronic pop/funk/psyche recordings made in Iran in the 1960's and 70's before the revolution and the overthrow of the Shah, Finders Keepers once again manage to educate and amaze with a prime selection of mindblowing obscurities. The music reflects Iran at a time when it was undergoing massive change, partly due to the influx of Petrodollars and the pervasive influence of modernity which created a tension between mystical Eastern traditions and the freedom of socioeconomic development. These pieces are borne of multiple traditions indigenous and exogenous, sonically paralleling the psyche phenomena of USA and Britain, while retaining its own distinct Persian personality in songs rich in sonic innovation as well as wilful and ecstatic vibes.

ELUVIUM - SIMILES - TEMPORARY RESIDENCE

The long-awaited follow-up to the acclaimed Copia, Eluvium takes a courageous creative leap with Similes, an 8-song album featuring three key musical elements previously uncharted by Eluvium: percussion, a verse-chorus song structure, and singing. For a celebrated experimental musician, it was just about the bravest and scariest direction to go. In this way, Similes is the most truly experimental Eluvium album yet, and also the most accessible. Written, performed and recorded as always by Matthew Cooper in his own Watership Sounds studio, Similes marries Eluvium's trademark dream-like aura with Cooper's unique, laconic vocals, akin to an especially contemplative Ian Curtis with trace reflections of Magnetic Fields and Brian Eno. It is the most daring - and ultimately most rewarding - work of Eluvium's impressive and prolific career.

BILLY GREEN- STONE - B-MUSIC

Killer soundtrack from the super-rare 1974 Ozploitation Biker-Psych Cult Classic!* The Cock Diesel chapter of the Finders Keepers gang presents a lovingly compiled and executed reissue of the hugely sought-after soundtrack to Sandy Harbutt's Ozploitation Biker flick 'Stone' by Billy Green. This is some real top-shelf material, a (monu)mental prog-rocking psyche-funked and avant-pop megalith originally imagined in synchronicity with director Harbutt's Aussie cult take on the B-movie sub-sect of Biker movies inspired by the likes of Marlon Brando's 'The Wild One' and 'The Cycle Savages'. Green's incredibly varied and ambitious compositions were among the most adventurous in Australia around 1974, whether combining synthesizers and didgeridoos on the opening sequence 'Eco Blue' to bombastic prog-rock themes with spiralling krautrock levels of cosmic intention and moments of Kottke/Fahey-esque desert blues.

WHITE HINTERLAND - KAIROS - DEAD OCEANS

It is easy to rave about Casey Dienel’s voice, which recalls Joni Mitchell’s eclectic stylistic arsenal as much as Victoria Legrand’s ghostly croon. Even those that do not like her project, White Hinterland, are still enthralled by her voice for a reason. She recalls the classic feel of Mitchell or Joan Baez and gives it a 21st century facelift. Under her fascinating arrangements and textures, Dienel loops her own voice and places them at various positions in the song, positions so infectiously perfect that comparisons to ’60s and ’70s neo-folk becomes imminent. Despite an abundance of influences on her sleeve, Dienel’s grasp of contemporary production techniques has allowed her to mold a style of her own. Along with collaborator Shawn Creeden, her tendencies of structural variation and unconventional accessibility are nearly unsurpassed in the realm of electronic pop. The latter of those tendencies sounds almost like a contradiction, but there are few artists like White Hinterland that are able to make sounds engineered in an unconventional manner appealing to audiences of various tastes. http://obscuresound.com/?p=4059

WORLD ATLAS - WORLD ATLAS - MAGIC MARKER

Led by Brian Groux and featuring Fred Thomas from Saturday Looks Good To Me, the band crafts intricate, lyrical pop songs that can soften even the hardest, metal-loving hearts. Groux's vocals eerily resemble that of Belle And Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch, but there's something more playful and low-key that sets World Atlas apart from other pop outfits. This can be heard in the band's newest single, "Winter Stories," in which a thumping bass meets a light and airy violin to create a breezy duet about picture novels and poetry. http://prod1.cmj.com/articles/display_article.php?id=165048170
